Comparing El Pretérito Indefinido & El Pretérito Perfecto
In this topic we will look at meeting and greeting in Spanish. We will learn how to exchange basic pleasantries in Spanish, such as saying hello and goodbye, how to ask someone their name and how to state our own name, and how to ask someone how they are feeling and how to describe how we are feeling.
Firstly, let’s look at different ways to greet someone in Spanish:
Hola: Hello/Hi
Buenos días: Good morning
Buenas tardes: Good afternoon
Buenas noches: Good evening/night
Hola can be used at any time of the day. Spanish people usually eat between 2pm and 4pm so buenos días is used up until 2pm. After 2pm we use buenas tardes and buenas noches is used after around 9pm until we go to bed.
If you wish to say that you are pleased to meet someone, you can say:
Mucho gusto: Pleased to meet you
Encantado/a: Charmed (you will say Encantado if you are a man and Encantada if you are a woman)
To ask someone their name you can say:
¿Cómo te llamas?: How are you called? (informal)
¿Cómo se llama usted?: How are you called? (formal)
¿Cual es tu nombre?: What is your name?
To respond we will say:
Soy…: I am…
Me llamo…: I am called…
Mi nombre es…: My name is…
To ask someone how they are you can say:
¿Qué tal?/¿Cómo estás?: How are you? (informal)
¿Cómo está usted? How are you? (formal)
There are many ways to respond. Here are some of the most useful:
Bien: Well
Todo bien: All is good
Muy bien: Very well
Como siempre: As always
Más o menos: Not bad
Mal: Bad
If you wish to ask the other person how they are, after they have just asked you, you can say:
¿Y tú?: And you? (informal)
¿Y usted? And you? (formal)
When you want to say goodbye to someone in Spanish you can say:
Adiós: Goodbye
Chao: Bye
Hasta luego: See you later
Nos vemos: See you later
Hasta pronto: See you soon

Irene: Estoy muy bien, gracias Juan. ¿Y tú?
Juan: Muy bien, gracias. Acabo de ir al mercado. No he estado en mucho tiempo y ha cambiado mucho.
Irene: Últimamente no he estado allí. Fui el año pasado. Se veía igual que siempre. Minúsculo.
Juan: Sí, fui el año pasado y fue como si nuestro mercado se hubiera congelado en el tiempo. Los mismos productos, la misma gente. Muy pintoresco, pero demasiado pequeño y no muy interesante.
Irene: Solía ir al mercado con mi madre cuando era más joven. Pero se volvió mucho más caro que los supermercados y con muchas menos opciones.
Juan: Yo pensé lo mismo. Pero tienes que probarlo de nuevo. ¡Es tan diferente ahora!
Irene: Entonces, ¿qué ha cambiado? ¡Seguro que Pedro el pescadero sigue allí! Si no ha muerto, claro.
Juan: Afortunadamente Pedro el pescadero todavía está vivo y bien y sigue vendiendo su pescado. Lo vi ayer. De hecho, su puesto fue una de las pocas cosas que no ha cambiado.
Irene: Es un gran tipo. ¡Qué personaje! ¡Todos conocen a Pedro!

Irene: Eso suena muy bien.
Juan: Todas estas cosas son producidas por la gente del pueblo. Tiene un estilo muy antiguo y moderno al mismo tiempo. Hay un gran énfasis en la sostenibilidad y la compra local.
Irene: Fui al supermercado anoche y no había casi nada ecológico.
Juan: Lo sé, cada vez hay menos. La gente simplemente no lo compra.
Irene: Ayer solo vi dos lechugas ecológicas que estaban marchitas y unos pimientos verdes ecológicos que ese estaban poniendo malos.
Juan: ¡Tienes que visitar el mercado Irene! Esta mañana he visto una gran cantidad de maravillosas frutas y verduras orgánicas.
Irene: ¿Cómo son los precios?
Juan: ¡Más baratos que el supermercado también!
Irene: ¡Eso es genial!
Juan: Tal vez no sean tan baratos como los alimentos no ecológicos del supermercado, pero más baratos y mucho mejores que los alimentos ecológivos del supermercado.
Irene: Gracias Juan. ¡Iré mañana!

Juan: Cheaper than the supermarket too!
Irene: That’s great!
Juan: They may not be as cheap as the non-organic foods from the supermarket, but cheaper and much better than the organic foods from the supermarket.
