The Verb To Have – El Verbo Tener
In this topic we will look closely at the Spanish verb Tener (To Have). We have already used Tener various times in this course, but until now we have only been conjugating it for Yo (I), Tú (You), Él (He) and Ella (She). Now we will learn how to conjugate the Tener for all persons.
Tener: To have
(Yo) Tengo: I have
(Tú) Tienes: You have (informal)
(Él) Tiene: He has
(Ella) Tiene: She has
(Nosotros/as) Tenemos: We have
(Vosotros/as) Tenéis: You have (group/informal)
(Ellos/ellas) Tienen: They have
(Usted) Tiene: You have (formal)
(Ustedes) Tienen: You have (group/formal)
Nosotros/as, Vosotros/as, Ellos/as
So, in this topic we have introduced Nosotros/as (We), Vosotros/as (You), and Ellos/as (They).
The ‘/as’ is to indicate that when you are talking about a We, You, or They that is entirely female you should use Nosotras, Vosotras, or Ellas. When the We, You, or They is entirely male or a mix of male and female you will use Nosotros, Vosotros, or Ellos.
You will see that Vosotros/as and Tú both mean You in English. Tú is used when you are describing one person and Vosotros/as is used when you are describing more than one person.
Remember also that the personal pronouns Yo, Tú, Él, Ella, Nosotros/as, Vosotros/as, and Ellos/as are all in brackets because using them is optional. For example, Nosotros tenemos means We have and Ellos tienen means They have. But equally so, just Tenemos means We have and just Tienen means They have. It is up to you whether or not you use the personal pronouns.

¿Cuántos abrigos tiene tu hermana? (How many coats does your sister have?) Ella tiene diez abrigos (She has ten coats)
¿Cuántas guitarras tiene tu padre? (How many guitars does your father have?) Mi padre tiene cinco guitarras (My father has five guitars)
¿Tienen tus primos un caballo? (Do your cousins have a horse?) Sí tienen un caballo (Yes, they have a horse)
¿Cuántos teléfonos móviles tenéis? (How many mobile phones do you have?) Tenemos siete teléfonos móviles en total (We have seven mobile phones in total)
From now on in the course we will continue using all of the personal pronouns (I, You, He, She, We, You, They) with our verbs and we recommend that you familiarise yourself with all of the verb endings we have learned here by writing your own practice sentences using Tener.
