Next, let’s see This, That, These, and Those in Spanish:

Este/a: This
Ese/a: That
Estos/as: These
Esos/as: Those

With each you will see that there are different ending options. Every noun (thing) in Spanish is either masculine or feminine. It is important to be aware of the gender of each noun you are using as other elements of your sentence will need to be altered according to this. Some adjectives (words that add description to other words) change according to the gender of the word they describe and as This, That, These, and Those in Spanish are types of adjective this is why they may need to change their ending.

Este (This) is used to describe masculine nouns. For example: Este traje: This suit
Este (This) changes to Esta (This) if the noun is feminine. For example: Esta corbata: This tie
Estos (These) is used to describe plural masculine nouns. For example: Estos calcetines: These socks
Estos (These) changes to Estas (These) if the nouns are feminine. For example: Estas faldas: These skirts

Let’s practice making some sentences using Este/a, Ese/a, Estos/as, and Esos/as using clothing vocabulary, the colours, prices and the verbs Querer (To want) and Tener (To have).

The following conversation takes place in a clothes shop:

¿Tenéis esta chaqueta en rojo?: Do you have this jacket in red?
No, lo siento. No tenemos esta chaqueta en rojo: No, I’m sorry. We don’t have this jacket in red
¿Tenéis esa chaqueta en rojo? Do you have that jacket in red?
Sí, esa chaqueta tenemos en rojo: Yes, that jacket we do have in red
Y estos pantalones… ¿tenéis estos pantalones en azul?: And these trousers… do you have these trousers in blue?
Estos pantalones no, pero tenemos esos pantalones en azul: These trousers no, but we do have those trousers in blue.
Perfecto, muchas gracias. Quiero la chaqueta roja y los pantalones azules: Perfect, thank you. I want the red jacket and the blue trousers.
Muy bien: Very good.
¿Cuánto es en total?: How much is it in total?
Noventa y ocho con cincuenta: €98.50

Some useful vocabulary and structures related to shopping for clothes:

Text

No necesito comprar nada. Aparte de una nueva moto y algunas cervezas más para la nevera. Julia quiere ir de compras todos los fines de semana y tengo que llevarla a la ciudad porque no conduce. ¡Es increíble! Está allí todo el día probándose zapatos y ropa y charlando con sus amigos sobre quién sabe qué. La espero en el bar de mi amigo y normalmente veo el fútbol. Julia me llama por teléfono cuando ha terminado de probarse cosas y quedo con ella para pagar todo con mi tarjeta de crédito.

Translation

Julia: When I go shopping, I like to look in all the shops before deciding to buy something. I try on many things and enjoy talking to the shop assistants about shoes, clothes and fashion. When I have been in all the stores on the high street, I like to stop and have a coffee in my favorite café. Normally, I also eat a piece of cake and read the newspaper. When I am sure of what I want to buy, I go back to the shops and use my husband’s credit card to buy my clothes and shoes.

Pablo: I hate shopping. There is nothing I need to buy. Apart from a new motorbike and some more beers for the fridge. Julia wants to go shopping every weekend and I have to take her to town because she doesn’t drive. It is incredible! She is there the entire day trying on shoes and clothes and chatting with her friends about who knows what. I wait for her in my friend’s bar and usually watch the football. Julia phones me when she has finished trying things on and I meet her to pay for everything with my credit card.

Questions

Please write a short text to describe your ideal day out shopping. For example, describe the kind of things you like to buy and the kind of shops you like to visit and where they are. If you don’t like shopping you might, for example, want to describe how you get things bought quickly, purchase online or ask someone else to buy things for you.

Answers

Possible answer:
