Professions and Ser (To Be)
In this topic we will look at the Spanish verb Ser (To Be) and how to use it to describe someone’s profession.
First, let’s see how to ask someone what their profession is in Spanish:
¿Cuál es tu profesión?: What is your profession? (informal)
¿Cuál es su profesión? What is your profession? (formal)
To reply to this question we will use the Spanish verb To Be. Ser is a fundamental Spanish verb which we have already seen a few times already in the course.
What are verbs?
Verbs are doing/action words. Every sentence has a verb. In a sentence, verbs describe what something or someone is doing/did/has done/will do/etc. All Spanish verbs finish in either -AR, -ER, or –IR.
In our first lesson we used Ser to give our name and in our second lesson we used Ser to state where we are from and our nationality:
(Yo) Soy… (nombre o nacionalidad): I am… (name or nationality)
(Yo) Soy de… (país, pueblo, ciudad): I am from … (country, town, city)
You will see that Yo is in brackets because using it is optional. “Yo soy” means “I am”. But equally so, “Soy” means “I am”. You can use the Yo if you wish with the verb, but you can also choose to omit it. It’s up to you.

Example sentences with Ser and professions:
(Yo) Soy recepcionista: I am a receptionist
(Yo) Soy estudiante: I am a student
(Yo) Soy abogado: I am a lawyer
What about negative statements in Spanish? It’s extremely easy! Whenever you want to make a sentence negative, you simply add “No” before the verb.
Let’s see some examples of negative sentences using Ser:
(Yo) No soy de Japón: I am not from Japan
(Yo) No soy recepcionista: I am not a receptionist
(Yo) No soy español: I am not Spanish
(Yo) No soy abogado: I am not a lawyer
