Present Perfect – El Pretérito Perfecto (Part 4)
In this topic we will look at meeting and greeting in Spanish. We will learn how to exchange basic pleasantries in Spanish, such as saying hello and goodbye, how to ask someone their name and how to state our own name, and how to ask someone how they are feeling and how to describe how we are feeling.
Firstly, let’s look at different ways to greet someone in Spanish:
Hola: Hello/Hi
Buenos días: Good morning
Buenas tardes: Good afternoon
Buenas noches: Good evening/night
Hola can be used at any time of the day. Spanish people usually eat between 2pm and 4pm so buenos días is used up until 2pm. After 2pm we use buenas tardes and buenas noches is used after around 9pm until we go to bed.
If you wish to say that you are pleased to meet someone, you can say:
Mucho gusto: Pleased to meet you
Encantado/a: Charmed (you will say Encantado if you are a man and Encantada if you are a woman)
To ask someone their name you can say:
¿Cómo te llamas?: How are you called? (informal)
¿Cómo se llama usted?: How are you called? (formal)
¿Cual es tu nombre?: What is your name?
To respond we will say:
Soy…: I am…
Me llamo…: I am called…
Mi nombre es…: My name is…
To ask someone how they are you can say:
¿Qué tal?/¿Cómo estás?: How are you? (informal)
¿Cómo está usted? How are you? (formal)
There are many ways to respond. Here are some of the most useful:
Bien: Well
Todo bien: All is good
Muy bien: Very well
Como siempre: As always
Más o menos: Not bad
Mal: Bad
If you wish to ask the other person how they are, after they have just asked you, you can say:
¿Y tú?: And you? (informal)
¿Y usted? And you? (formal)
When you want to say goodbye to someone in Spanish you can say:
Adiós: Goodbye
Chao: Bye
Hasta luego: See you later
Nos vemos: See you later
Hasta pronto: See you soon

Inés: No te lo vas a creer.
Edward:¿Qué ha hecho esta vez?
Inés: Bueno, ha entrado el jefe, más o menos sobre las diez, se ha levantado Amaia y le ha gritado como una loca.
Edward:¿Qué le ha dicho?
Inés: Le ha insultado en frente de toda la oficina llamándole de todo, tonto, perezoso, entre otras cosas.
Edward: Guau. Se ha pasado un poco esta vez.
Inés: Ha estado tan frustrada estos últimos meses y lo ha sacado todo.
Edward:¿Y qué ha hecho el jefe?
Inés: Primero, nada. Le ha escuchado y cuando ha terminado Amaia simplemente le ha preguntado si sabe dónde está la puerta.
Edward:¿Le ha despedido?
Inés: Hasta ahora no. Están juntos todavía en el despacho del jefe.
Edward:¿Cuál es el problema de Amaia?
Inés: Para empezar, es una quejica. Pero estos últimos meses ha estado diciendo que el jefe no hace nada. Que siempre llega tarde a la oficina, nos critica más que ayudarnos, y no sabe cómo hacer su trabajo.
Edward: Que es verdad.
Inés: Ya. También ha dicho muchas veces que huele a sudor. Dice que se marea cuando él está cerca.
Edward: Sí, es verdad, el hombre huele que apesta.
Inés: Pero no puedes afrontar el problema de esa forma.
Edward: Si quieres mantener tu trabajo no.
Inés: Estoy segura de que hoy ha sido su ultimo día con nosotros.
Edward: No la voy a echar mucho de menos si te digo la verdad. Ella tampoco trabaja bien.
Inés: Pues yo voy a echar de menos estas broncas. ¡Son mejores que los dramas de la tele!

Aída: Me alegro Erik. ¿Qué has hecho hoy?
Erik: Muchas cosas.
Aída: ¿Qué asignaturas?
Erik: ¿Hoy?
Aída: Sí, ¿qué has practicado hoy?
Erik: Bueno, un poco de física, también química. Por la tarde hemos tenido clase de francés y para terminar matemáticas.
Aída: No recuerdo, ¿cuál es tu asignatura favorita ahora?
Erik: Me gustan las ciencias.
Aída: Como a tu padre ¿eh?
Erik: Papá es físico. La verdad es que me gusta menos la física. Me gusta más la biología.

Aída: Eso ayuda mucho.
Erik: No hemos tenido clase con el señor Ramírez hoy porque está de vacaciones. No ha sido tan divertido ni tan interesante con la señora Castro. No es mala profesora pero no es como el señor Ramírez.
Aída: ¿Has ido a tu clase de arte también después del cole?
Erik: No, hoy no. Mi clase de arte es los jueves. Hoy no hago nada después del cole. He estado un poco con mis amigos en el parque después del cole y ahora estoy contigo.
Aída: Gracias por venir hijo. Me encanta estar contigo. ¿Quieres una galleta?
Erik: Claro, gracias. ¿Tienes zumo de piña también?
Aída: Sí, en el frigorífico. También hay zumo de mango y naranja.
