The verb To Want – El verbo Querer
In this topic we will we will look in detail at the useful Spanish verb Querer (To Want).
We first saw El verbo Querer back in topic 6 when we practiced ordering drinks in a Spanish-speaking bar. Querer is a very commonly used verb so it is worth getting well accustomed to it and in this topic we will practice conjugating and using Querer for all persons.
Before reviewing how to conjugate Querer we should recap on an important point related to the use of Querer. Spanish people tend to be very direct with their choice of words when they ask for things and so it is normal to say ‘I want a beer’ (Yo quiero una cerveza) and for the waiter to say ‘Do you want a beer?’ (¿Quieres una cerveza?). It is less usual to hear ‘I would like a beer’ (Me gustaría una cerveza) or ‘Would you like a beer?’ (¿Te gustaría una cerveza?). It is not rude to say “Quiero…” (I want…).
You will also hear people saying “Ponme…” (Put me…) or “Dame…” (Give me…) when they want something and again this is in no way impolite. So, don’t be afraid to use Querer when you want something.

(Él/Ella) Quiere: He/She wants
(Nosotros/as) Queremos: We want
(Vosotros/as) Queréis: You want (group/informal)
(Ustedes) Quieren: You want (group/formal)
(Ellos/as) Quieren: They want
As always, the pronouns Yo, Tú, Él, Ella, etc are all in brackets because they are optional. You can use them if you wish with the verb, but you can also choose to omit them. It’s up to you.
Let’s see some practice sentences with Querer:
¿Quieres un café? No, gracias. No bebo café: Do you want a coffee? No thanks. I don’t drink coffee.
¿Quieres algo para comer? Sí, quiero comer algo rico. Do you want anything to eat? Yes, I want to eat something tasty.
¿Queréis comer ahora? Sí, queremos comer ahora. Tenemos hambre. Do you want to eat now? Yes, we do want to eat now. We are hungry.
¿Qué queréis comer? Queremos comer patatas fritas y ensalada: What do you want to eat? We want to eat chips and salad.
¿Dónde quieres ir? Quiero ir al monte: Where do you want to go? I want to go to the mountain.
¿Queréis ir a la discoteca? No, no queremos ir a la discoteca. Do you want to go to the nightclub? No, we don’t want to go to the nightclub.
¿Helena y Pablo quieren estudiar inglés? No, no quieren estudiar inglés. Quieren estudiar francés. Do Helena and Pablo want to study English? No, they don’t want to study English. They want to study French.
¿Tu hermana quiere vivir en Holanda? Sí, ella quiere vivir allí. Va a vivir en Amsterdam: Does your sister want to live in Holland? Yes, she wants to live there. She is going to live in Amsterdam.
