Past Simple – El Pretérito Indefinido (Part 3)
In this topic we will look at meeting and greeting in Spanish. We will learn how to exchange basic pleasantries in Spanish, such as saying hello and goodbye, how to ask someone their name and how to state our own name, and how to ask someone how they are feeling and how to describe how we are feeling.
Firstly, let’s look at different ways to greet someone in Spanish:
Hola: Hello/Hi
Buenos días: Good morning
Buenas tardes: Good afternoon
Buenas noches: Good evening/night
Hola can be used at any time of the day. Spanish people usually eat between 2pm and 4pm so buenos días is used up until 2pm. After 2pm we use buenas tardes and buenas noches is used after around 9pm until we go to bed.
If you wish to say that you are pleased to meet someone, you can say:
Mucho gusto: Pleased to meet you
Encantado/a: Charmed (you will say Encantado if you are a man and Encantada if you are a woman)
To ask someone their name you can say:
¿Cómo te llamas?: How are you called? (informal)
¿Cómo se llama usted?: How are you called? (formal)
¿Cual es tu nombre?: What is your name?
To respond we will say:
Soy…: I am…
Me llamo…: I am called…
Mi nombre es…: My name is…
To ask someone how they are you can say:
¿Qué tal?/¿Cómo estás?: How are you? (informal)
¿Cómo está usted? How are you? (formal)
There are many ways to respond. Here are some of the most useful:
Bien: Well
Todo bien: All is good
Muy bien: Very well
Como siempre: As always
Más o menos: Not bad
Mal: Bad
If you wish to ask the other person how they are, after they have just asked you, you can say:
¿Y tú?: And you? (informal)
¿Y usted? And you? (formal)
When you want to say goodbye to someone in Spanish you can say:
Adiós: Goodbye
Chao: Bye
Hasta luego: See you later
Nos vemos: See you later
Hasta pronto: See you soon

Julia: Me lo compré el año pasado cuando vivía en Madrid.
Tom: ¿Ah sí? ¿Y qué has hecho con tu otro coche?
Julia: Se lo vendí a un amigo. Me gustaba mucho mi otro coche pero estaba un poco viejo y a veces tenía problemas. Mi amigo quería un coche barato y se lo vendí a un buen precio. ¿Y tú? ¿Cuándo te has comprado esa moto? Antes no tenías moto ¿verdad?
Tom: No, antes siempre iba en bicicleta. Pero encontré un trabajo bastante lejos de mi casa y me compré la moto.
Julia: Ah claro.
Tom: Estaba en oferta, muy barata.
Julia: ¿Cuándo te la compraste?
Tom: Mmmm… hace un mes, más o menos.
Julia: Ah muy bien.
Tom: Sí, estoy muy contento. Aunque un día tuve un accidente. ¡Qué susto!
Julia: ¡Qué dices!
Tom: Sí, pero no fue nada. Iba demasiado rápido.
Julia: Tienes que tener cuidado. Las motos son peligrosas.

Lola: Hoy estoy bastante bien pero ayer estuve mal.
Enrique: ¿Qué te paso ayer?
Lola: ¿Por dónde empiezo…? Bueno, fui a ver a mi amiga Sara a Asturias hace tres días. Compré un billete de tren pero después cancelaron todos los trenes por la nieve.
Enrique: Sí, cayó mucha nieve hace algunos días.
Lola: Tanta no sé yo pero sí todos los trenes cancelados. Entonces tuve que coger un autobús hasta Madrid.
Enrique: Mucho más tiempo.
Lola: Hombre claro. Seis horas en autobús en comparación con dos en tren. Además un autobús sin aseo ni comida. ¡Llegué a Madrid con un hambre y unas ganas de ir al baño increíbles!
Enrique: No me sorprende. Qué desastre. Las compañías de autobuses hoy en día son unas cutres de categoría.
Lola: Sí, es verdad.
Enrique: ¿Y después de llegar a Madrid, que hiciste?
Lola: Me organizaron un taxi.
Enrique: ¡Un taxi! ¿Cuantos kilómetros hay de Madrid a Asturias?
Lola: Unos cuatrocientos cincuenta kilómetros.
Enrique: ¿Pagaste por el taxi?
Lola: Que va, no no no. Me pagó el taxi la compañía del tren, el billete de autobús también.
Enrique: Bueno, ¿bien no?
Lola: Me pareció una pérdida del dinero pero, sí, viajé cómoda.
Enrique: ¿Y el taxista, feliz seguro?
Lola: ¡Súper contento! Qué bien para él ¿eh? ¡Muchísimo dinero! Además, su hermana vive desde hace dos meses en Oviedo entonces después de dejarme en Gijón se fue a visitarla.
Enrique: ¡Qué bien! ¿Y tus vacaciones en Gijón, qué tal, lo pasaste bien?
Lola: No, cogí una infección de garganta. Estuve todos los días enferma en la cama de mi amiga. Regresé ayer todavía con dolor de garganta.
Enrique: ¿Viajaste en tren esta vez?
Lola: Sí, por lo menos el viaje fue más sencillo.

Lola: I’m pretty good today but yesterday I was bad.
Enrique: What happened to you yesterday?
Lola: Where do I start…? Well, I went to see my friend Sara in Asturias three days ago. I bought a train ticket but then they cancelled all the trains because of the snow.
Enrique: Yes, a lot of snow fell a few days ago.
Lola: So much, I am not sure, but all the trains cancelled. So I had to take a bus to Madrid.
Enrique: Much longer.
Lola: Of course. Six hours by bus compared to two by train. Also, a bus without toilet or food. I arrived in Madrid with an incredible hunger and desire to go to the bathroom!
Enrique: I’m not surprised. What a mess. The bus companies nowadays are a absolutely rubbish.
Lola: Yes, it’s true.
Enrique: And after arriving in Madrid, what did you do?
Lola: They arranged a taxi for me.
Enrique: A taxi! How many kilometres is it from Madrid to Asturias?
Lola: About four hundred and fifty kilometres.
Enrique: Did you pay for the taxi?
Lola: No way, no no no. The train company paid the taxi for me, the bus ticket as well.
Enrique: Good, right?
Lola: I thought it was a waste of money but, yes, I travelled comfortably.
Enrique: And the taxi driver, happy for sure?
Lola: Super happy! How good for him, huh? A lot of money! Also, his sister has lived in Oviedo for two months so after leaving me in Gijón he went to visit her.
Enrique: Great! And your holidays in Gijón, how was it, did you have a good time?
Lola: No, I caught a throat infection. I was sick every day in my friend’s bed. I returned yesterday still with a sore throat.
Enrique: Did you travel by train this time?
Lola: Yes, at least the trip was easier.
