Past Simple – El Pretérito Imperfecto – (Part 1)
In this topic we will look at meeting and greeting in Spanish. We will learn how to exchange basic pleasantries in Spanish, such as saying hello and goodbye, how to ask someone their name and how to state our own name, and how to ask someone how they are feeling and how to describe how we are feeling.
Firstly, let’s look at different ways to greet someone in Spanish:
Hola: Hello/Hi
Buenos días: Good morning
Buenas tardes: Good afternoon
Buenas noches: Good evening/night
Hola can be used at any time of the day. Spanish people usually eat between 2pm and 4pm so buenos días is used up until 2pm. After 2pm we use buenas tardes and buenas noches is used after around 9pm until we go to bed.
If you wish to say that you are pleased to meet someone, you can say:
Mucho gusto: Pleased to meet you
Encantado/a: Charmed (you will say Encantado if you are a man and Encantada if you are a woman)
To ask someone their name you can say:
¿Cómo te llamas?: How are you called? (informal)
¿Cómo se llama usted?: How are you called? (formal)
¿Cual es tu nombre?: What is your name?
To respond we will say:
Soy…: I am…
Me llamo…: I am called…
Mi nombre es…: My name is…
To ask someone how they are you can say:
¿Qué tal?/¿Cómo estás?: How are you? (informal)
¿Cómo está usted? How are you? (formal)
There are many ways to respond. Here are some of the most useful:
Bien: Well
Todo bien: All is good
Muy bien: Very well
Como siempre: As always
Más o menos: Not bad
Mal: Bad
If you wish to ask the other person how they are, after they have just asked you, you can say:
¿Y tú?: And you? (informal)
¿Y usted? And you? (formal)
When you want to say goodbye to someone in Spanish you can say:
Adiós: Goodbye
Chao: Bye
Hasta luego: See you later
Nos vemos: See you later
Hasta pronto: See you soon

Comparison of El Pretérito Imperfecto and El Pretérito Indefinido
Uses of El Pretérito Imperfecto
For habitual actions in the past:
Cuando éramos pequeños estudiábamos en ese colegio: When we were little we studied in that school
For descriptions of the past:
Mi profesor era simpático e inteligente: My teacher was friendly and intelligent
For actions happening in the past:
Mientras todos hablaban, Juan miraba por la ventana: While everyone was talking, Juan was looking out the window
Uses of El Pretérito Indefinido
Specific unique or repeated actions:
¿Qué hicisteis en Semana Santa?: What did you do at Easter?
Fuimos a París, ¿y vosotros?: We went to Paris, and you?
For an action which interrupts another action already taking place:
Cuando tenía 18 años comenzó a estudiar en la univesidad: When he was 18, he started to study at university
(El Pretérito Indefinido describes the main action and El Pretérito Imperfecto describes the reason/circumstances in which the main action happens)

Peter: Bueno vale. ¿Qué tienes?
Elisa: Unos cacahuetes.
Peter: Oh no. No como cacahuetes.
Elisa: ¿Tienes alergia?
Peter: Ahora no, pero cuando era pequeño tenía alergia a los cacahuetes.
Elisa: Yo cuando era pequeña comía muchos alimentos con gluten (pan, espaguetis, pizza…) y luego me dolía mucho la tripa.
Peter: ¿Tal vez tenías alergia al gluten?
Elisa: Sí, más o menos. Tenía intolerancia al gluten. Y todavía la tengo.
Peter: Oh, ¿Y qué comes en vez de pan?
Elisa: Pues hace unos años comía pan sin gluten y pasta sin gluten, pero ya no. No me gustan nada. Prefiero comer arroz y quinoa.
Peter: Mmm.. Me encanta el arroz. El risotto es mi plato favorito. De pequeño no me gustaba, pero ahora me gusta muchísimo.
Elisa: Yo prefiero la paella. Como paella tres veces a la semana por lo menos.
Peter: A mí me gusta la paella también.

Silvia: Oh, mi abuelo era un hombre maravilloso. Cómo le echo de menos. Se murió el año pasado. Qué triste el día que se murió. Pienso mucho en él cada día. Cómo era. Las cosas que le gustaban y las cosas que hacía.
Pedro: Le gustaban sus palomas ¿no?
Silvia: Sí, es cierto. Tenía muchas palomas siempre en una caseta en el jardín.
Pedro: Tenía pájaros en su casa también ¿no?
Silvia: Sí, tenía periquitos de varios colores en su casa. Les cuidaba como a niños y a menudo estaban allí volando por la casa. En el salón, en el comedor, en la cocina.
Pedro: A mi abuelo le gustaba su jardín. Estaba siempre en el jardín cultivando frutas y verduras.
Silvia: ¿Hace cuántos años murió tu abuelo?
Pedro: Hace más de veinte años. No le recuerdo muy bien. Pero recuerdo que era un hombre muy majo. Yo pasaba todos los domingos en la casa de mis abuelos cuando tenía cinco, seis, siete y ocho años y me lo pasaba súper bien.
Silvia: ¿Donde vivían tus abuelos?
Pedro: En la calle Campoamor. Cuando era joven mi abuelo jugaba al fútbol. Era profesional y jugaba para el Atlético de Madrid.
Silvia: ¡Qué dices! No lo sabía.
Pedro: Si, jugaba de defensa. No era uno de los más famosos pero todavía es muy conocido por los seguidores del fútbol.
Silvia: ¿Le viste nunca jugar al futbol?
Pedro: En directo, desafortunadamente no. Pero le he visto muchas veces por DVD. Mi padre tiene muchos DVDs de los partidos antiguos del Atlético de Madrid.
Silvia: Qué guay Pedro.
Pedro: Es genial verle jugar. Jugaba muy bien. Era muy rápido, fuerte y valiente.
Silvia: No sé si te lo he dicho pero mi abuela era famosa también.
Pedro: No, no lo sabía. ¿Por qué era famosa?
Silvia: Tenía más fama en el sur de España que en Madrid o por el norte. Era cantante de flamenco. Hacía muchos conciertos en Andalucía. También apareció en la televisión varias veces. Tocaba la guitarra y cantaba muy bien.
Pedro: ¿Has visto DVDs de ella?
Silvia: No, nadie en la familia tiene DVDs de ella. Pero hay varias actuaciones en YouTube.
Pedro: ¡Qué bien Silvia!
Silvia: ¿Quieres verla?
Pedro: ¡Por supuesto!
Translation
Silvia: Oh, my grandfather was a wonderful man. How I miss him. He died last year. The day he died was so sad. I think a lot about him every day. How he was. The things he liked and the things he did.
Pedro: He liked his pigeons, right?
Silvia: Yes, it’s true. He always had many pigeons in a garden shed.
Pedro: He had birds in his house too, right?
Silvia: Yes, he had budgies of various colours in his house. He looked after them like children and they were often there flying around the house. In the living room, in the dining room, in the kitchen.
Pedro: My grandfather liked his garden. He was always in the garden growing fruits and vegetables.
Silvia: How many years ago did your grandfather die?
Pedro: More than twenty years ago. I don’t remember him very well. But I remember that he was a very nice man. I spent every Sunday at my grandparents’ house when I was five, six, seven and eight years old and had a great time.
Silvia: Where did your grandparents live?
Pedro: In Campoamor Street. When I was young my grandfather played football. He was professional and played for Atlético de Madrid.
Silvia: What! I didn’t know.
Pedro: Yes, he played in defence. He was not one of the most famous but he is still well known by followers of football.
Silvia: Did you ever see him play football?
Pedro: Live, unfortunately not. But I’ve seen him many times on DVD. My father has many DVDs of the old games of Atlético de Madrid.
Silvia: How cool Pedro.
Pedro: It’s great to see him play. He played very well. He was very fast, strong and brave.
Silvia: I don’t know if I told you but my grandmother was famous too.
Pedro: No, I did not know. Why was she famous?
Silvia: She had more fame in the south of Spain than in Madrid or the north. She was a flamenco singer. She played many concerts in Andalusia. She also appeared on television several times. She played the guitar and sang very well.
Pedro: Have you seen DVDs of her?
Silvia: No, nobody in the family has DVDs of her. But there are several performances on YouTube.
Pedro: How nice Silvia!
Silvia: Do you want to see her?
Pedro: Of course!
