Numbers 1-100 and Tener (To Have)

In this topic we will look at numbers 1-100 in Spanish, El verbo Tener (The verb To Have), and how to ask and state age. Numbers are important elements of learning Spanish, but don’t worry if you don’t remember them right away as we will review them regularly throughout the course.

Firstly, let’s see the numbers in Spanish 1-20:

Cero (0)

Uno (1)
Dos (2)
Tres (3)
Cuatro (4)
Cinco (5)
Seis (6)
Siete (7)
Ocho (8)
Nueve (9)
Diez (10)
Once (11)
Doce (12)
Trece (13)
Catorce (14)
Quince (15)
Dieciséis (16)
Diecisiete (17)
Dieciocho (18)
Diecinueve (19)
Veinte (20)

Let’s continue looking at numbers in Spanish 20-100:

Twenty in Spanish is Veinte. After Twenty the numbers follow this format…

Veintiuno (21), Veintidós (22), veintitrés (23), etc.

Thirty in Spanish is Treinta. After Thirty the numbers follow a slightly different format (using “y” which is “and” in Spanish)…

Treinta y uno (31), Treinta y dos (32), Treinta y tres (33), etc.

That same format continues with all of the other numbers up to 100:

Cuarenta (40), cuarenta y uno (41), cuarenta y dos (42), cuarenta y tres (43), etc. Cincuenta (50), Sesenta (60), Setenta (70), Ochenta (80), Noventa (90), Cien 100.

How to ask and state age in Spanish:

¿Cuantos años tienes?: How old are you? (friendly)
¿Cuantos años tiene usted? How old are you? (formal)
Tengo….: I have….
Tengo 30 años: I have 30 years

In Spanish, we do not say I am 30 years old, we say I have 30 years. Therefore we use the verb Tener (To Have).

What are verbs?

Verbs are doing/action words. Every sentence has a verb. In a sentence, verbs describe what something or someone is doing/did/has done/will do/etc. All Spanish verbs finish in either -AR, -ER, or –IR. Tener (To Have) is a fundamental Spanish verb that we use a lot. We will practice it regularly throughout the course.

Some other examples using Tener (To Have):

Tengo dos perros: I have two dogs
Tengo cuatro guitarras: I have four guitars

How to make questions in Spanish:

Making questions in Spanish is very easy! You actually don’t have to do anything at all to change a regular sentence apart from putting it in questions marks if you are writing and making the intonation of a question if you are speaking.

For example:

¿Tengo dos perros?: Do I have two dogs
¿Tengo cuatro guitarras?: Do I have four guitars

(You will observe that in Spanish we use two question marks to frame our questions.)

Questions

¿Cuántos/as….. tienes?: How many….. do you have?

I have = Yo tengo. I don’t have = Yo no tengo.

With plurals in Spanish, if a noun ends in a vowel, simply add -s. If a noun ends in a consonant, simply add es.

(televisiones: televisions, ordenadores: computers, pares de zapatos: pairs of shoes, sombreros: hats, coches: cars)

1. ¿Cuántos televisiones tienes?
2. ¿Cuántos ordenadores tienes?
3. ¿Cuántos pares de zapatos tienes?
4. ¿Cuántos sombreros tienes?
5. ¿Cuántos coches tienes?

In Spanish some things/nouns are masculine and some are feminine. Masculine singular nouns begin ‘El’ and masculine plural nouns begin ‘Los’. Feminine singular nouns begin ‘La’ and feminine plural nouns begin ‘Las’. For all of the previous questions we have used ‘Cuántos’ because all of the things were masculine nouns (e.g. El televisión. Los ordenadores). For the next three questions we will use ‘Cuántas’ because these things will be feminine nouns (e.g. La mascota. Las bicicletas).

6. ¿Cuántas mascotas tienes?
7. ¿Cuántas bicicletas tienes?
8. ¿Cuántas canoas tienes?

(mascotas: pets, bicicletas: bicycles, canoas: canoes)
